Crossing the Harrowed Gulf of Tehuantepec

AS SEEN IN THE JULY 2014 ISSUE OF SAIL MAGAZINE

A weather map shows the strength and direction of a typical T-Pecker system: note the high winds in the relatively small Gulf of TehuantepecTo superstitious sailors, the ocean holds many perils—some more legendary than others. There’s the Kraken, that fearsome tentacled beast that drags ships into the ocean’s depths, the ghost ship Flying Dutchman, the cursed Bermuda Triangle and, of course, the Gulf of Tehuantepec. In the case of the Gulf of Tehuantepec, where “T-Pecker” winds ravage the southernmost fringe of Mexico’s Pacific shore, the challenges are more fact than fiction.   Continued ...
