SANTA CRUZ-IN as seen in Cruising World Magazine

Aas seen in Cruising World Magazine

Cruisin' Santa Cruz

A charter in California’s Channel Islands proves you don’t have to go abroad to find adventure.

Seventy-five miles northwest of Los Angeles, the Pacific rushes up to the tidy Mediterranean-style city of Santa Barbara, at the foot of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Chic shops and galleries line State Street, tasting rooms and restaurants nestle in the Funk Zone, and rusty trawlers make room for luxury yachts in the marina, opposite timeworn Stearns Wharf. Santa Barbara is one of the key jumping-off points for California’s Channel Islands, a chain that parallels the coastline. Embraced as both a national park and a marine sanctuary, the land and surrounding waters have been protected since 1980.

Twenty miles long and 6 miles at its widest point, Santa Cruz Island is rugged, verdant, and the jewel of the Channel Islands. Last summer it was our destination for a brief cruise with photographer Sharon Green and her partner, Brad Brown; friends Samantha and Steve Worzman; and Capt. Ken Miller ....

Onward to Hawaii!

2015 Transpac coverage as seen in SAILING magazine

Last Betsycam shot of the day ...
"Reality television show producers could not have dreamed up a more cockamamie set of obstacles than what the 2015 Transpacific Yacht Race served its 60 entrants, racing from Los Angeles, California, to Honolulu, Hawaii, in July.
During the last of three starts there was rain, thunder and lightening—unheard of in California mid-summer. A hurricane threatened; the fleet was becalmed. Fires, failures and things-that-go-bump-in-the-night peppered the course. And if that wasn’t enough, during two of the busiest nights for arrivals, entrance to the Ala Wai Marina was shut by a raucous south swell that rolled huge breakers down the channel. Dozens of racers, eager for the traditional greeting of mai tais and leis, were forced to stand off until dawn. "It was a trip to the Twilight Zone,” said Randy Smith ..."

BAHAMAS BASH

AS SEEN IN SAILING MAGAZINE - JULY 2015

BAHAMAS BASH
A catamaran proves to be the perfect party platform for a reunion of college pals on a charter cruise through the Abacos

The underbelly of our Sunsail444: B Grieser

" ... For our active group of Generation Y adventure junkies (generation “why-not” I would later conclude) a catamaran was a must. Plans included scuba diving, paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkeling and swimming, in addition to hikes, runs and compulsory dancing until the wee hours. The Sunsail 444 four-cabin catamaran would provide ample deck and storage space for all our toys and equipment, plus sprawling accommodations for eight soon-to-be exhausted explorers ... "

Paradise Bound

Even Penelope stayed home in Troy when Ulysses sailed off ...
So often, one partner gets hooked on sailing, but their companion doesn’t; one has a boating background, while the other’s water-based activities are limited to the bath.
If you’re having a hard time getting your loved ones into sailing, now might be the time to sweeten the deal. Sailing schools exist in every beautiful corner of the world; who can turn down a learn-to-sail vacation in paradise?

POSTCARDS FROM THE KEYS

AS SEEN IN THE FEB 12 2015 ISSUE OF SOUNDINGS MAGAZINE

Postcards from the Keys

Posted on 12 February 2015 Written by Betsy Crowfoot Photos by Bob Grieser

Our mission was as shallow as the water in Biscayne Bay. After the winter of 2014 — arguably the harshest in memory, with higher-than-average snowfall and lower-than-average temperatures — we were impatient for summer. A posse of friends since college, on the hunt for sun and fun, we set our sights on a springtime, island-hopping tour of the iconic watering holes of the Florida Keys.

CRUISING WITH A CROWD

As seen in the April 2015 issue of Sailing magazine

CRUISING WITH A CROWD

Digging deep into a wooden chest filled with doublets, waistcoats, sashes and breeches I found a tri-cornered hat, complete with beaded dreadlocks dangling from its leather brim. Perfect! Along with my plastic cutlass and scabbard, I was a near-clone of Capt. Jack Sparrow. I sauntered out into the bright sunlight to join my crewmates, scrambling over cannons and up ratlines like scurrilous pirates. St. Vincent and the Grenadines served as the primary filming location for "Pirates of the Caribbean" and a dozen years later, we found ourselves romping through several of the remaining movie sets at the town of Wallilabou, aka "Port Royal" in the popular movie series. It was just one of the many treasures we unearthed on a Sunsail flotilla cruise through the Windward Islands.
