San Francisco is hosting the America’s Cup for the first time in the history of the storied competition. Big winds, big catamarans, big crowds — it should be some spectacle
When the America’s Cup comes to San Francisco, so will an estimated 2.6 million more tourists than the city welcomes in a typical year. One of the longest-running international sporting events, the 11-week America’s Cup is also one of the largest — third only to World Cup soccer and the Olympics, as far as economic impact goes.
Yes, the Cup is bigger than the Super Bowl. And seeing that it has been almost two decades since the racing was hosted in the United States, enthusiasts are expected to flock to San Francisco to see what America’s Cup Event Authority CEO Stephen Barclay is calling “NASCAR on the water.” ...

 Locals Smith and Davidson Capture U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship


CORONA DEL MAR, Calif. (June 27, 2013) – Carolyn Smith (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Bayley Davidson (Costa Mesa, Calif.) cashed in on their fourth consecutive attempt to win the Ida Lewis Trophy at the 2013 U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship, hosted by the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. The duo tallied a 3-4-2-4 scoring line in Thursday's third and final day of racing to win the title by eight points over contenders Cassie Obel (Marina del Rey, Calif.) and Annika Garrett (Culver City, Calif.). Smith and Davidson were representing the Newport Harbor Yacht Club and Balboa Yacht Club this week.

Nine sailors die in two race


Fatal shipwrecks two weeks apart in California waters called  ‘an extraordinary coincidence’

Four sailors racing in the annual Newport to Ensenada Race were killed off the California coast in the early hours of April 28. The tragedy came just two weeks after five sailors died off San Francisco when their boat was hit by a rogue wave and driven onto the rocky shore of the Farallon Islands.
