Key West Race Week proves gustworthy and trustworthy, at 30

There used to be an old saying, "Don't trust anyone over 30.” But as Quantum Key West Race Week (QKWRW) successfully wrapped up its third decade, this popular regatta proved otherwise. Trusty, gusty breezes enveloped the fleet of nearly 100 boats from the get-go, providing the exhilarating and challenging conditions racers have come to expect, for 30 years.

Hundreds of sailors from around the world turned up to compete in five days of racing in the turquoise waters off this funky and frivolous Florida hamlet. The first two days saw winds of 15 to 20 knots, gusting to 25, which eased slightly on Day Three. As if to appease sailors on ‘the morning after’ the Mount Gay Rum party, the breeze relaxed and remained light the last two days. As a result, sailors met with an assortment of conditions that gave everyone a chance at QKWRW gold.

The Tobago Cays are a bit of heaven-on-Earth, where sea turtles and cruisers play in the warm Caribbean water.

This is my kind of heaven!” said crewmate Barry Worthington as we slid into the bight of Tobago Cays. An ocean of liquid bliss surrounded us, with bands of water in every imaginable shade of blue, framed by a foamy crescent of waves where the coral reef greets the indigo sea.

A handful of other boats were moored there, but the islands themselves were noticeably uninhabited with the exception of sea turtles that swam by with soothing regularity. (more: here)

West Coast Sailors have a new chance to stretch their legs with California Offshore Race Week, a trio of back-to-back bluewater sprints from San Francisco to San Diego.

Bill Guilfoyle’s Prevail in the 2015 SoCal 300, which is now a part of CORW. The race has four legs, scored individually, with a fifth score added for the entire race length and weighed 1.5 times more heavily than the other legs. The scores are then combined to determine each yacht’s overall score.

Cruisin' Santa Cruz

A charter in California’s Channel Islands proves you don’t have to go abroad to find adventure.

 Seventy-five miles northwest of Los Angeles, the Pacific rushes up to the tidy Mediterranean-style city of Santa Barbara, at the foot of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Chic shops and galleries line State Street, tasting rooms and restaurants nestle in the Funk Zone, and rusty trawlers make room for luxury yachts in the marina, opposite timeworn Stearns Wharf. Santa Barbara is one of the key ­jumping-off points for California’s Channel Islands, a chain that parallels the coastline. Embraced as both a national park and a marine sanctuary, the land and surrounding waters have been protected since 1980.

Twenty miles long and 6 miles at its widest point, Santa Cruz Island is rugged, verdant, and the jewel of the Channel Islands. Last summer it was our destination for a brief cruise with photographer Sharon Green and her partner, Brad Brown; friends Samantha and Steve Worzman; and Capt. Ken Miller ....
